Most people learn a chord as a shape before they ever learn what it is. Three fingers there, thumb behind the neck, and G becomes a hand position long before it becomes anything else. That is a fine way to start playing, and a bad way to understand what happens the first time a chart shows a chord your hand has never made.

A chord is a set of notes. The shape is just one way of reaching those notes on one particular instrument — which means the shape is downstream of the notes, not the other way around, and a diagram that is generated from the notes will always cover ground that a diagram copied from a shape book cannot.

What a chord name is actually saying

C names three notes: C, E and G. Add a number and you are adding a note by interval — C7 keeps those three and adds a B flat, a minor seventh above the root. Change the quality and you are changing which of those intervals apply — Cm lowers the E to an E flat, and the chord is minor because that one note moved.

Every symbol on a chart is built the same way, and it has exactly three parts:

  • The root, which is the letter at the front. It names the note the chord is measured from, and it is the only part that changes when you transpose.
  • The quality, which is everything that decides major, minor, diminished or augmented. It is usually the smallest part of the symbol and always the most audible: m is one character and the difference between a chord that sounds bright and one that sounds sad.
  • The extensions, the numbers and words after that — 7, sus4, add9, maj7 — each of which names one more note by its distance from the root.

None of that mentions a fret, a string, or a finger. It is a description of a sound, in the same sense a recipe is a description of a dish rather than a description of a kitchen.

One root, seven chords

The quickest way to feel how little of this is memorisation: hold the root still and change only the intervals. Every chord below is built on C, and each differs from the one above it by a single note.

  • C — C, E, G. The root, a major third, a fifth.
  • Cm — C, E flat, G. The third drops a semitone; that is the whole of minor.
  • C7 — C, E, G, B flat. A minor seventh on top of the major chord.
  • Cmaj7 — C, E, G, B. The same idea a semitone higher, and a completely different mood.
  • Csus4 — C, F, G. The third is replaced, not added, which is why a sus chord sounds unresolved: nothing in it says major or minor.
  • Cadd9 — C, E, G, D. A ninth added while the third stays.
  • Cdim — C, E flat, G flat. Both the third and the fifth pulled down.

Seven chords, one letter, no shapes involved. Once the notes are the thing you know, the name of a chord you have never played is still readable — and a chart that hands you Fadd9 at eleven o'clock at night is a chord you can work out rather than a chord you are missing.

From notes to a shape

The shape only enters once you ask a second question: on this instrument, where are those notes? For a guitar that means finding each note of the chord somewhere on six strings, within a hand span that can actually close around them — which is arithmetic on fret positions and open strings, not a fact that has to be remembered separately for every chord.

That is the whole difference between looking a chord up and working it out. A lookup table answers "what shape is Dm7" by having somebody type that shape in ahead of time. Working it out from the notes answers the same question by finding D, F, A and C on the fretboard — which also answers a question nobody typed in ahead of time, because it did not need to be anticipated.

Why one chord has several shapes

If a chord is a set of notes, then any arrangement of those notes is that chord — and a guitar can reach most sets in four or five places. That is not ambiguity, it is choice:

  • A different position on the neck. C as an open shape and C barred at the third fret are the same three notes in a different register.
  • A different order. Put E at the bottom instead of C and you have an inversion: same chord, different colour, often a smoother move from whatever came before it.
  • A different number of notes. Nothing says all six strings have to sound. Three notes are a full major chord; the rest is doubling.

Slash chords are this made explicit. D/F# is an ordinary D — D, F sharp, A — with the F sharp put in the bass, and the reason it appears in a chart is almost always a bass line walking down while the harmony stays put. The note after the slash is usually already in the chord; when it is not, as in C/D, the chart is asking for a genuinely different sound rather than a rearrangement.

Where a lookup table runs out

A table is only as complete as whoever built it. Ask it for a chord somebody invented on the spot — Cadd9 voiced a particular way, a slash chord like D/F#, a chord spelled in a notation the table's author never considered — and it either has an entry or it does not. There is no way to ask it to figure one out.

A chord is not memorable one at a time — there are thousands of them once you count extensions, inversions and slash bass notes — and no table is the right size for "every chord somebody might type." Starting from the notes sidesteps the question of size entirely: the method that finds a shape for C is the same method that finds one for a chord that has never appeared on a chart before, because neither one was special-cased to begin with.

It is also what makes the arithmetic around a chord possible at all. Moving a whole sheet into another key, or working out which fret turns the barres into open shapes, both start by reading a chord symbol as a root plus a set of intervals. A shape cannot be transposed; a set of notes can.

Why this is worth knowing as a reader, not just a builder

None of this changes what you play. It changes what you can trust. A diagram that is computed from the chord's own notes is checkable against the name printed above it — if the chord says Am7, the shape underneath it is answerable to A, C, E and G, and nothing else. A diagram pulled from a table carries no such guarantee; it is only as right as whoever typed it, for exactly the chords somebody thought to type.

The next time a chart hands you a chord you have never played, that is the question worth asking before your fingers do anything: not "what shape is this," but "what notes is this" — because the shape was only ever an answer to the second question, borrowed for the first.
