A recording sits in one key because somebody's voice sat there on the day it was recorded. Yours might not. Transposing is the fix: move every chord in the song up or down by the same interval, and the melody keeps its exact shape — the same distances between notes — just starting somewhere else.
Nothing about the song changes. The words are the same, the progression is the same, the feel is the same. Only where it sits moves.
The key on the page is a fact, not an instruction
A chart that says {key: G} is not telling you to play in G. It is recording what key the
song was written or first recorded in — a fact about its history, the same kind of fact as who
wrote it. ChordPro even keeps it as its own line for exactly this
reason: once the original key is written down, everything else can be described relative to
it instead of guessed at.
That distinction is worth keeping straight, because it changes what "transpose by two" means.
It does not mean "go find the key two steps from wherever you happen to be." It means "move
two steps from the key this chart says it was written in" — the same instruction, on any
song, regardless of what key that song started in. A chart that only ever shows you the new
key's name (now it's in A) hides that arithmetic; one that shows the distance from the
written key (+2) hands it to you.
How far to move it
The title of this piece promises a key that fits your voice, so here is the method, which takes about four minutes and no theory at all.
Find the highest note in the song, not the average one. Sing the chorus — it is nearly always where the top note lives — and notice whether you are reaching or straining. A song is not too high because it is tiring in the second verse; it is too high because of one note you cannot get to twice in a night.
Then move in semitones, one at a time, and sing that same phrase again. One semitone is a smaller change than it sounds on paper and often the whole difference between a note you hit and a note you hope for. Two or three is common. If you have gone more than five and it is still wrong, you are probably in the wrong octave rather than the wrong key — try the whole thing an octave down before you keep stepping.
Then, and this is the half everybody forgets, check the lowest note in the song. Your range is fixed and transposing moves both ends of it together: every semitone that rescues the top of the chorus buries the bottom of the verse by exactly the same amount. If the verse goes inaudible before the chorus becomes comfortable, the song does not fit your voice in any key, and the fix is a different arrangement — take the low line up an octave, or hand it to somebody else — rather than a different number.
What it costs on a guitar
Singers move in semitones. Guitars do not care about semitones equally, and this is where a transposition that is right for the voice becomes wrong for the hands.
Five keys are comfortable on a guitar because their chords use open strings: G, C, D, A and
E, with Em and Am alongside them. Move a song from G to
Ab — one semitone, the smallest move there is — and every open shape you knew
becomes a barre. The voice got a tiny improvement and the hands got a different instrument.
Two things follow, and they are the reason this site has separate tools for them:
- If the key is wrong, transpose. The sound has to move, and the shapes are whatever the new key gives you. A transposer will do the whole sheet at once.
- If the key is right and the shapes are wrong, use a capo. It changes what your hand holds and leaves the sound exactly where it is — a song in Ab played with G shapes and a capo on the first fret. The capo calculator will tell you which fret does that for your particular chords.
The two combine, which is how most singers actually end up playing: transpose until the voice is right, then capo until the hands are.
Degrees instead of names
There is a notation built entirely around the "relative, not absolute" idea, taken further:
instead of naming each chord, it numbers it. In the key of G, G is written 1,
C is 4, D is 5 — the degree of the scale each chord starts
on, not a letter at all. It is how Nashville session players read a chart they have never seen
before, from an artist who might change key between the soundcheck and the show.
The reason it works is that a number describes a relationship, not a pitch. 1 4 5 1 is
the same instruction whether the song ends up in G, in D, or in Bb — nothing on the page has to
change, because nothing on the page named an absolute note to begin with. Writing a chart in
letters and one in numbers are two descriptions of the same fact, at two different distances
from the actual sound.
The cost is that somebody has to know what key the numbers are being read in, and that somebody is usually the person who called the tune. Numbers make a chart portable between keys; they do not make it playable by someone who arrived late.
The same idea, from a different control
There is a second way to change what your hands do without changing what the room hears, and it looks like the opposite of transposing: a capo. Capo on the second fret covers it in full, but the short version belongs here too, because it is easy to conflate the two the first time you meet them — "moving the key changes the song for everyone in the room; moving the capo changes only what you read." Transposing changes the sound; a capo changes only the shape your hand holds to reach a sound that was never in question.
They answer different questions, and a chart that keeps them as two separate facts — the song's key, and where a capo goes — lets one player choose a capo position while somebody else plays the same progression barre, with neither of them touching the other's part.
Why the written key still matters once you've moved
It would be simpler, on the page, to just overwrite the key every time somebody transposes and forget what it used to be. The reason not to: the written key is the one fact a chart cannot recover on its own once it is gone. Everything else — the new key, the capo position, which degree each chord is — can be recomputed from it at any moment. Lose it, and a "+2" stops meaning anything, because nobody can say two steps from what.
So the key that gets printed at the top of a song is worth treating as data, not decoration — the one number every other transposition on that chart is measured against.
Questions people ask
- How do I transpose a song to a different key?
- Move every chord by the same number of semitones, and leave the words where they are. Up two semitones turns G into A, C into D and Em into F#m; down two does the reverse. Doing it by hand is reliable but slow, so most people paste the sheet into a transposer, step the key until it sits right, and keep the result.
- What key should I sing a song in?
- The one where the highest note of the chorus is comfortable twice in an evening rather than once. Start from the written key, move a semitone at a time, and sing the highest phrase at each step. Then check the lowest note as well: transposing moves both ends of your range together, so every semitone that rescues the top costs you the same amount at the bottom.
- Does transposing change the melody?
- No. Every note moves by the same interval, so the distances between the notes — which is what a melody actually is — stay identical. The song sounds higher or lower and is otherwise the same tune. What does change is the chord shapes under it, and on a guitar that can mean the difference between open chords and barre chords.
- What is the Nashville number system?
- A way of writing a chart with numbers instead of chord names, where each number is the degree of the scale that the chord is built on. In the key of G, G is 1, C is 4 and D is 5. Because a number names a relationship rather than a pitch, the same chart is correct in every key, which is why session players use it when the key might change at the last minute.
